Pachinko Expiration Stickers Described
When vintage pachinko machines were put into service, they were authorized for use for 12 months. A sticker was attached to the front of the machine on the playfield in one of the four corners outside of the area where the ball bounces off the pins. Unfortunately the sticker may have been removed or fallen off.
The pachinko expiration sticker has lots of Japanese writing in very small type. Many of the stickers will have a few numbers somewhere on the sticker which represent the Japanese Imperial Year and Month of expiration. A few stickers will have only Japanese writing and no numbers. You will probably need a magnifying glass to read the numbers.
Determining Year of Manufacture from Expiration Sticker
If you find numbers on your sticker, the first two numbers represent the Imperial Year. Add 1925 to the number to determine the Western Year. For example: 51 + 1925 = 1976.
There are usually a few Japanese characters after the Imperial Year followed by a 3, 6, 9 or 12. This represents the months of March, June, September or December. So a sticker with the numbers 51 and 3 would mean the machine expired March of 1976.
Since machines were in service for a year, you can subtract 1 from the Western Year to get the approximate year of manufacture. For a sticker with the numbers 51 and 3, it expired March of 1976 and was probably made in 1975.
Note: You may see these numbers 239-2 or 239-4 on a sticker. These have nothing to do with the age of the machine.
